The Art of Relaxation

When you see black belts in the ring, they usually are quite relaxed especially compared to beginners. It’s only when they strike that they put everything into action. Then they go back to the state of relaxed muscles.

In real life, we also shouldn’t stay tensed up all the time. We need to relax. Not just physically, but mentally. Research repeatedly shows that if we keep at a project without breaks we do worse than if we take breaks periodically.

If you’re doing a project, stepping away for something else can really help refocus you. A nice shower feels great and allows your mind to wander around where it can brainstorm on new ways to approach things. Walks in nature are also great. What works to relax you?

One way that I find helpful is adult coloring books. I have the materials set up at my calligraphy desk so I can pick them up anytime. There’s no real consequence if I’m not that satisfied. It’s very freeing and helps develop my color sense.

If you’ve moved away from art like most adults, why not trying to take something simple like this up again to help you get into states of relaxation and be creative simultaneously. What would you like to try or are already doing artistically?
